This course introduces participants to the concept of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises. Beginning with an outline of the nature of social enterprises and the four pillars of sustainability, it frames the concept of social entrepreneurship using the "Golden Circle" framework, thus giving participants the tools necessary to break down the components of social enterprises in a concrete manner.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces participants to the concept of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises. Beginning with an outline of the nature of social enterprises and the four pillars of sustainability, it frames the concept of social entrepreneurship using the "Golden Circle" framework, thus giving participants the tools necessary to break down the components of social enterprises in a concrete manner. Finally, the course also introduces participants to the Business Model Canvas (BMC) tool, and highlights the major challenges faced by entrepreneurs when starting social enterprises. 

NOTE: We recommend using the latest version of the Chrome or Safari browsers to ensure an optimal experience viewing the lectures.                      

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Argue for the merits of starting a social enterprise;
  • Identify the key components that make up social enterprises; and
  • Develop a Business Model Canvas for the establishment of a social enterprise.
